TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU CAME UP WITH THE EDIBLE CUP IDEA!
LOLIWARE began when we entered “The Jell-O Mold Competition” in 2010 in Brooklyn, NY. We were inspired by the decorative history of Jell-o as a molded dessert, but as trained Industrial Designers, we wanted to challenge ourselves to create something functional. We experimented with gelatin in a multitude of ways and became aware of its incredible properties: it’s translucent, moldable, edible, and biodegradable. Re-framing gelatin as a material helped us to realize its potential as an edible cup: a more sustainable alternative to disposable cups that could be flavored to complement different beverages! Further research opened our eyes to a whole new world of gels and ultimately, we chose a plant-based gelatin for it’s structural nature, taste and vegan-friendliness.
WHAT WENT INTO THE PHYSICAL DESIGN TO MAKE THE CUPS “BIODEGR(EDIBLE)?”
We experimented and tested prototypes for years before launching LOLIWARE! As a company that focuses on innovation, experimentation is a continuous, never ending process as we work to improve our material and develop new products. We have pulled together ideas from all different industries and approach the challenge from a variety of perspectives to create LOLIWARE. We are learning from food science, plastic manufacturing, ceramics techniques, candy making, chocolate production, molecular gastronomy, etc. With bits and pieces of knowledge from all these areas we’ve developed a recipe, production process, and product applications for our “Biodegr(Edible)” material that we find both useful and delicious.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR LOLIWARE?
LOLIWARE as a material has so many possibilities for applications – it’s really endless! But we’ll start with expanding our line of tableware products with new cups, straws and more.
HOW WILL LOLIWARE TRANSFORM THE MITZVAH SPACE?
Americans throw away over 500 million plastic cups every year. There’s just no question that waste issues like this will need to be addressed. LOLIWARE is non-toxic because it is made with edible ingredients free from any GMO’s, BPA, or petroleum-based materials. After being used, LOLIWARE is completely compostable. In fact it will turn from cup to soil in 60 days in home compost, unlike plastic and even bio-plastics that must be industrially composted. For us it’s all about creating sustainable options that are also fun and tasty!
RIGHT NOW, YOU HAVE FIVE DELICIOUS FLAVORS. WHAT’S NEXT?
New flavors are definitely in the works! We’d love to hear from readers what flavor cups they would like to see. Right now we are liking the idea of florals like hibiscus or rose, summer fruits like coconut or watermelon, and for fall maybe something cozy like cinnamon or chai. What does everyone think?!
