Venue Spotlight: Marquee (NYC)

MARQUEE3

WHAT MAKES A MITZVAH AT MARQUEE SO SPECIAL?

Marquee is an internationally renowned nightclub. Kids and adults are getting to experience what really is the best in nightlife: design, lighting, sound, special effects and of course, service. Whereas a lot of Mitzvahs are set in event venues that try to replicate the club experience, we are giving them the real thing. Adults always have just as much fun as kids and usually our parties involve very little sitting.

IS THERE A PARTICULARLY GREAT SPOT YOU RECOMMEND FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS?
First off, is our neon Marquee sign that is right at the end of our entrance hall. We like to call this our “instagrammable moment” because if you ever search for the hashtag #marquee or #marqueeny, you’ll see partygoers from around the world posing in front of it (see photo attached). The other really unique option is The Highline! We are directly under the 26th Street Viewing Spur that has a metal frame that was built for photo-ops. A lot of families take photos there directly before their party.

WHAT CAN GUESTS EXPECT UPON ARRIVAL?
When all the kids first walk in and their eyes literally pop out of their head, taking the club in. The lights, the LED walls, the height of the ceiling, the disco ball… It’s a pretty visually impactful place – especially for 12 and 13 year olds and I love seeing their jaws drop!
WHERE EXACTLY IS MARQUEE?
Marquee is conveniently located near Penn Station, Chelsea Piers, The Javits Center, The High Line and the Westside Highway… so it’s easy to get to from out of town (especially Jersey and Westchester).
OK. GIVE US THE DISH ON YOUR FAVORITE DISH!
We use Riviera Catering & Events for most of our parties. I have to say their mini chicken and waffles is my favorite! It’s a delicious piece of fried chicken in a mini waffle cone drizzled with syrup. That combo of sweet and salty… what could be better!

MITZVAH IN A CLUB? AM I TOO OLD?
Mitzvah parents can expect to have the night of their life – especially those who haven’t been out clubbing in a long time. They also have their own private mezzanine where they can hang out away from the dance floor when they need a break from the action.
LET’S TALK MUSIC. WHAT’S HOT?
Nobody doesn’t like 90’s Hip Hop… Biggie, Jay-Z, P Diddy… Parents, kids and staff alike. Nowadays though, the Whip Nae Nae dance is sure to get everyone on the floor.
FUN FACT?
At the end of the event our staff starts cleaning and maybe having a Red Bull! When the Mitzvah ends (usually between 10-11pm) their night is just beginning… Marquee is open until 4:00am
“Designed by Josh Held, the designer of W Hotels and Bar Americain, Marquee was transformed into a tripped out warehouse with 28-FOOT ceilings and industrial design accents, including chandeliers constructed from functioning microphones, exposed equalizers, walls covered in recycled leather belts and welded rebar handrails. When entering the space, guests will encounter a long procession that leads them to the middle of the expansive open space – channeling the exhilaration of stumbling upon an underground music venue. An intimate mezzanine and main floor alcove room, “The Boombox,” are extensions of the space, but can also function as their own self-contained venues, ideal for private parties.

With jaw-dropping sound and visual elements, including a Funktion-One sound system currently unparalleled in New York, Marquee will feature a full size stage to host live acts, a floor-to-ceiling LED feature wall and a computerized moving light system engineered to feel like an indoor music festival. Creating a multi-level sensory experience, the first ever “light jockey” will create custom visual effects nightly on concert grade equipment designed by the famed Steve Lieberman.

Instead of tables situated around the dance floor, the stage will be the focal point of the 900 capacity room, with a clear sightline from every seat in the club. Easily removable stackable banquettes add to the layout’s flexibility, allowing it to transition seamlessly from a concert venue to a dance club on the same night. In addition to its trademark storage banquettes, Marquee will have storage tables and all wood floors designed with extra grip to keep guests on their feet dancing all night. The venue will also feature an overhead wraparound catwalk where performers from costumed dancers to acrobats will dazzle the crowd nightly.

The mezzanine level will feature a 3D hand-painted yellow terracotta tile bartop and a custom back bar installation resembling an equalizer, crafted from 2,000 vintage books. Stadium leveling in the 150 capacity space will allow for an unobstructed view of the stage and catwalk, keeping the focus on top-tier live acts and entertainment.

The 100 capacity Boombox borrows design inspiration from the grittiness of New York City subcultures, including unique elements such as walls upholstered in hand dyed burlap and a mirrored graphic bar.”
